— Bowls of Boulingrin — Particularity and method of manufacture
The bowls of Boulingrin are not spherical, but slightly crushed at both poles. Their shape is asymmetrical: one of the poles is more crushed than the other. This is in addition to the fact that each ball has a heavier side than the other. The inscriptions specify which is the heaviest side (in our case, the side 2 is the heaviest). All these characteristics give an elliptical trajectory, especially marked when their speed is low. To reach the target, the player must therefore dose his strength and line of fire.
In the Middle Ages, bowling balls were made of yew, ash or oak cheapest wood. Since the sixteenth century or the seventeenth century, it is the guaiac, which is used.
Guaiac is a very hard greenish-brown wood. It is sometimes called, along with other species, ironwood or ironwood. Its density, one of the highest in the world, is 1,301, so that, unlike most woods that float on the water, guaiac sinks.
— History of Boulingrin —'
The bowling, from the English bowling green, is a bowling type bowling game whose name refers to the grassy field on which the game is practiced (the name has now become lawn bowling). This game of boules from England is close to petanque and bowling. The game consists of a multitude of balls, two teams and a pig, or "jack". The goal is to get as close as possible to this little white ball, rolling the slightly flattened balls on the edge while putting one foot on a kind of bath mat. The interest of the game does not lie in the throw as such, but in the orientation of the balls.
Born in England in the twelfth century, this game and its traditions are less and less practiced. Boulingrin balls, especially the wooden one, became prized collectibles.
