These exquisite letters were drawn by L.E.M. Jones and published in 1818 by Charles Joseph Hulmandell as a paper lithograph.
I found the letters in the British Museum, and they are used with permission.
The letters are all printed on one panel which is shown as the featured photo. I tried to make sure that each letter was the same height. I chose to leave the folds, tears, smears, and other aging realities to indicate the age of the letters.
The scenes appear to have been drawn with a pencil.
These are 6" squares which leaves you plenty of room to add sashing and borders. Let me know if you want larger squares.
These letters have to be seen to be fully appreciated. I bet you know someone who is a teacher who would love to have a quilt made from these letters in her classroom. Each letter shows a scene from another era rendered with beautiful grace and deftness. Children will be captivated by the different scenes in all the letters.
Also available are 4 inch squares of the word Welcome and LOVE. If these are of interest to you send me a note with your order or send me an email.
The panel is the main image and you can see they are separated by 1/4" on the fabric and each square has a green line drawn around it 1/8" from the edge of the picture. Cut the letters out on the green line.If you sew with 1/4" seam allowance, it means you will be sewing onto the letter square 1/8" so you will lose very little of the square/image. The cheapest straight green line will also give you a visual reference help to make sure your seams stay straight.
And for those of you always looking for cool alphabets, I have these same letters with the pencil lines filled with photos of the mountains. If that interests you, let me know and I'll send you a picture or pictures of them. It is more colorful (green and blue) but the scenes are barely recognizable as scenes. They are more about color embedded in intriguing alphabet shapes.
