Vintage Fiesta Pottery Tom & Jerry Mugs in Original Turquoise Glaze Circa 1939-1959: The Tom and Jerry was an alcoholic egg and milk drink, popular in the 30's and 40's. It was served warm from a large bowl in handled mugs. Homer Laughlin cheapest had already been producing this mug with a different handle when Fiesta ware was being designed. Adopting the ring handle from the general Fiesta ware line, the Tom and Jerry mug was born. The distinctive ring handle is all you get for design on the T&J mug (it is one of only two pieces that is without the legendary rings, the other is the dripcut syrup pitcher, that was also borrowed from elsewhere). Use the mug for coffee and it's just the perfect size. Nice thick walls keep the coffee warm longer than contemporary cups. This example in turquoise is in excellent condition without damage and is nicely marked on the bottom.
At its introduction in 1936, Fiesta was produced in five colors:
The original five Fiesta colors were Green, Cobalt Blue, Yellow, Red and Ivory. A year after the Fiesta line debuted, the company added a sixth color: turquoise.
Turquoise, while not strictly an original color (having been introduced about a year into Fiesta's production) was otherwise also in continuous production until the end of the original vintage era in 1969.
Definitive Logo Marks of Old Fiesta ware:
Lowercase “fiesta” stamp: If the mark is an under-glaze stamp and the word “Fiesta” is entirely lowercase letters, the piece is vintage. As is the case here.
Turquoise is another rare and coveted Fiesta color for collectors
