Product code: Vintage Mexican Lacquered Olinara Tray: cheapest Blue and Unusual

An unusual color in this lacquered carved wood tray: blue and blue and orange and white with a black rim.

The techniques and materials and designs used on these beechwood artworks have
remained unchanged for thousands of years. Similar pieces have been found in
Mayan ruins! Lacquerwork is done in only three areas of Mexico; small villages focus
all their artisans on the folk art, it's often their only source of income. This one
probably comes from the forests of the state of Guerrero, where many masks also
are made.

Everything is carved by hand, including the intricate designs; this tableau features white
pelicans outlined in orange. The one-inch slant from the center to the edge appears
to have poufy feathers. The carving is done and then the color applied after which
coats and coats of a local vegetable lacquer are applied.

This tray looks fadey, but it is really the use cheapest of different shades of blues. The condition is excellent, no stains, cracks, etc. The back is black, and there is evidence of a black
paint or pen covering a small area where a sticker was applied.

Dimensions: 15.5" long, 11" wide (with a one inch slant) and 1" tall.
