Pablo Picasso was the most dominant and influential artist of the first half of the 20th century. Associated most of all with pioneering Cubism, alongside Georges Braque, he also invented collage and made major contributions to Symbolism and Surrealism. He saw himself above all as a painter, yet his sculpture was greatly influential, and he also explored areas as diverse as printmaking and ceramics.

Picasso made numerous prints throughout his career — his first in 1899, when he was still a teenager; his last in 1972, when he was 90. Experimenting all the while, he produced some 2,400 prints in total, in a wide variety of techniques. Printmaking, unlike painting, is a collaborative process, and over the decades Picasso worked cheapest with, and took instruction from, the masters of a host of different printing ateliers.

While his importance as a painter inevitably adds to his prominence as a printmaker, his graphic oeuvre alone would ensure his significance in the history of modern and contemporary art. Picasso achieved highly innovative and original results by altering techniques to suite his creative needs, leading to his immense popularity as an multi-disciplinary artist and printmaker.
