Product code: Four Cheques Checks National Broadway Bank Treasurer Mayor Comptroller New York City cheapest Civil War 1860s Financial History Banking Americana

This is a remarkable lot of four “County Treasurer of New York at the National Broadway Bank” checks (cheques) from the Civil War era and post-War New York City: two dated 1868, one dated 1863, and one 1865. Each is signed by the Mayor and the Comptroller of the City, and others. They represent City payment for a variety of expenses, including: Election expenses of services and rent in the 7th District, 4th Ward; unpaid taxes; a check for advertising in the Sunday Times for the Soldiers' cheapest Bounty Fund, and for copying records for the Board of Supervisors for 1867. I think these four cheques framed together would make a fabulous wall piece for your Americana collection in your den. Great for any banker or broker's office, or any collector of New York City memorabilia. Beautifully engraved with the New York State logo (seal) and in great shape as 19th century paper was acid free, hence it looks better than last month's newspaper, which has probably turned yellow already! The small holes in the checks are the cancellation marks -- cancellation of checks of this era was done with a device that punctured the check to show it had been deposited or cashed. I really love these four wonderful examples of New York City and State financial history! Free shipping with these, too. There are a lot of antique checks floating around for sale on the Internet, but most are not historically significant like these, which were payments from the largest City in the United States. And by the way, we still have Districts, but not Wards. Email me with any questions. These are very special items!
