The colorful image is part of an ongoing series of paintings--"Out of Our Element"--where I explore the unusual imagery that appears in the refractions and reflections of figures underwater. The painting is based on an underwater photograph taken in a swimming pool in Puerto Rico.
I began taking underwater photographs of friends while living in Puerto Rico in 2004, and what I discovered, unexpectedly, has captivated me ever since. I've been inspired to continue photographing friends and family in various bodies of water (pools, lakes, oceans, underground caves) in different light conditions in search of the magical moment when the body, the water, and the light mingle to reveal fantastical images. Once I capture cheapest these images I try to render them exactly as they appear in the photographs; truth is more fascinating than fiction.
