Wheel-thrown porcelain with Nickel based crystalline glaze. Just Yum. 11 3/4 inch tall
About crystalline glazes:
Crystalline glazes are high temperature (I fire to over 2300 degrees Fahrenheit) glazes in which the crystals are carefully grown during the firing. The crystals are optically active and their dazzling appearance changes depending on the angle and strength of light. The visual depth of the glaze is difficult to capture in a photograph. They are perhaps the most fickle of glazes with infinite variations based on the firing schedule, colorants used, thickness of application, alignment of planets etc. Opening the kiln is like Christmas morning, or like a nightmare, depending cheapest on results. Losses are high, but offset by the stunning results of some pieces.
Crystalline glazes are stable and waterproof (will not "sweat" when filled with water). Their color is permanent. The glaze is generally food-safe, though liquids, especially acidic liquids, are not recommended in direct contact with crystals due to the slight porosity of the crystalline surface and subsequent possibility of leaching.
