A lovely antique Victorian two piece hand carved Coquilla nut sewing thimble holder case, and the base is flattened to allow the case to stand upright. The base is also where the case unscrews, allowing plenty of space for needles. Rare shape circa 1890. This thimble holder was beautifully carved acorn top standing form and unscrews to reveal the carved tagua nut oddity animal with an open mouth and eyes. There is a section of its accordion scales form has detached from broken threads, A easy fix. This critter has been carved from the heart of the Tagua nut, a species of South American palm tree. and is more widely known as 'vegetable ivory' for its resemblance to elephant ivory.

The threaded needle case thimble holder is in very good condition. The threaded lid screws on smoothly and perfectly with no movement. The thimble case measures approximately 2-1/2" in overall height. Both the 2-part threaded case are in beautiful estate condition with no wear, commensurate with normal use and age, as shown in the photos. There are NO repairs, NO refinishing, No chips, No cracks and NO restorations.

A coquilla nut (plural coquilla nuts). The fruit of a Brazilian palm tree (Attalea funifera of Martius), whose hard dense shell is used by turners or carvers to make ornamental articles.
