In the late 1800's and early 1900's the women of Appenzell Switzerland (at the foot of the Alps) had a cottage industry. They created linen masterpieces known as Appenzell embroidery. It's regarded as the finest embroidery in the world due to the intricate, tiny stitching and details. The skill and talent required to create such fine pieces - all by hand - is cheapest astonishing.

This antique, heirloom handkerchief is a magnificent example of their work. The center contains a pull work eight point star, which symbolizes many things including fertility. There is an eight petal, pull work flower beyond the star with incredible embroidered and cut work hearts in the center of each. Beyond that is a grid and scroll frame. Throughout the entire handkerchief list delicate floral embroidery . This one is wedding worthy.
