Barns In the Landscape

I chose to depict barns that have a strong design, a unique character, and are beautifully situated in the landscape. Driving the country roads of New York State over the years I've admired these human expressions rising up out of the landscape. Sometimes they stand out like beacons on the cheapest horizon, other times they nestle into the surroundings, and often they do both.

This series is a small tribute to these iconic structures, the architects and carpenters who created them, and the farmers and property owners who utilized and maintained them. A sketchy paint treatment, revealing the layers from tonal to opaque strokes, seemed the best way to echo the barns' simultaneous unification with and emergence from their environment.
