In the novel, Bo Mason, along with his wife Elsa and two sons, live a transient life of poverty and despair. Drifting from town to town, the ruthless Bo seeks fortune. The novel portrays 3 decades of the Mason family life's they struggle to survive the rough years of the early 20th century.
