Crucifix Candlestick Holder

This pressed milk glass candlestick holder takes the form of a three-dimensional crucified Christ, with a slanted Latin inscription reading 'INRI' set on a banner affixed to a Latin-style cross above Christ's head, which is inclined onto the right shoulder. The Gospel According to John (19:19-20) describes Pontius Pilate writing an inscription which read "Jesus of Nazereth, King of the Jews" in Greek, Latin and Hebrew. In Western art only the Latin version is generally depicted, abbreviated to 'INRI' (Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum).

Milk glass candlesticks were produced in great numbers from 1840 to 1890, typically ranging in height from 8-12 inches. They were used in private homes, convents and churches. The candlestick holder was cast in separate two-piece iron molds, the socket and base then fused together by a glass wafer at the top of the standard while the glass was still hot.

This candlestick holder, circa early 20th century, stands 12-1/2" tall with a hexagonal base measuring 5" in diameter. Weighs in at about 3 lbs. before packaging.

In lovely antique condition with flaws. These flaws happened during the manufacturing process—a rough pontil mark cheapest where the cup was fused to the top of the crucifix and, the two hairline scratch marks on the base. These defects do not affect the structural integrity of the piece nor are they immediately visible. The candlestick holder is solid and stable, displays well, clean and has no unsightly candlewax drips and stains. In Very Good antique condition.
