Rare Birds' Xmas Carol antique book by the much loved Kate Douglas Wiggin, American author and child welfare advocate (pics 1-8). Story centers on a young girl born on Christmas and her generosity and compassion for the large poor Bird family neighbors. By age 10, Carol Ruggles is bedridden cheapest probably by TB but story has many humorous touches, particularly in the scenes of the Ruggles family's home life. Book has 69 pages and several black & white steel engraving illustrations that are initialed "HRH". First privately published in 1886 then in 1888 by Houghton Mifflin in this hardcover edition. Lovely antique find to collect or gift for birthday or special occasion for one who loves KDW and children's stories.
Kate Wiggin was a lifelong American child welfare advocate who started free kindergartens for poor children in Frisco & Oakland as well as a school to train teachers. She is the author of the much loved Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm.
Condition exceptionally good for the antique age with tight spine & no missing pages or writings. Spine ends and edges have minor wear & small tears. Page 27-28 has a 1.5" tear at top. Everything I list has been loved in another home so minor defects are to be expected. Stored with care in my odor & pet free studio. Free insured 1st class mail.
