This listing is for a beautiful set of 2 demitasse cups with footed saucers. Made of transparent porcelain with a lovely floral pattern, each was individually hand-painted in raised gold gilt and accented with green that is speckled with gold. Marked on the bottom in blue L S & S Limoges (inside a double circle), FRANCE. The letters, “L. S. and S., represent New York importers, L. Straus and Sons. They were founded in 1865 and exported porcelain from France to the United States.
In wonderful condition there are no cracks, stains or repairs, The hand applied gold gilt is beautiful. Wear is consistent with age and use, there is one very tiny chip on the foot of one saucer that is barely visible, this set was priced accordingly. COMPANY HISTORY:
In 1865 Lazarus and Isidor Straus formed the whole importing firm of L. Straus & Son, they were importers of Crockery, China and Glassware. When the two other sons, Nathan and Oscar joined the firm, the name was changed to L. Straus & Sons. (Shown in the last photo are the three sons of Lazarus and Sara Straus, from left to right: Nathan, Oscar and Isidor). L. Straus & Sons started out at 44 Warren Street in New York and by 1885 their showrooms went from 42 to 48 Warren Street. They also had branch offices in such locations as London, Paris, Berlin and Yokohma, Japan. L. Straus & Sons produced their own products in a number of factories in Europe that they exclusively controlled, they became one of the largest importing firms in the country. Their reputation was based on selling quality products.
