Large German Majolica Plate by Georg Schmider cheapest of Zell - Large 12" Concave Plate/Bowl - Made in Western Germany - 'Plums and Berries' Pattern
This is a blue Zell Majolica glaze plate from George Schmider; the pattern is "Plums and Berries" against a basket weave. cheapest It was produced in West Germany at the United Zell Ceramic Factories in Badenia. As seen in photos, the face of the plate has a robin egg blue field with a a fine basket weave pattern accented by colorful fruit. The top of the plate features four large purple plums hanging from a gnarled brown branch sprouting three green leaves. The piece is further decorated with a cluster of four pink raspberries growing on a scrolling leafy vine.
The plate measures a large 12" in diameter and is in excellent vintage condition. It has a wonderful concave shape with the rim raised 1½". The back of the plate is imprinted in a faint green ink reading "MADE IN WESTERN GERMANY" and an '89' or '68'. It is impressed with the mold number "2230BX??". As in common in hand finished pottery, there are some dots of glaze on the rim of the plate right below the lowest leaf.
This charming plate displays beautifully and would be a nice addition to a collection of Schmider pottery plates. It makes great decorative accent used in a plate stand on a table or shelf, or could be hung on the wall and mixed with similar majolica pottery pieces. Very pretty!
