Vintage Nagual Shape Shifter Pot cheapest Signed Arnulfo Vazquez Rodriguez Tonala Mexican Folk Art, Mustachioed Sun, FREE SHIPPING
This handsome vase was handmade and hand painted in Tonala, Jalisco Mexico. It is a wonderful example of Mexican Folk art and Ceramic traditions from this area of Mexico. This vase was all handmade and Painted and then given a lovely hand burnished satiny finish. Arnulfo shares this legacy with a family of creators that enhances the colorful tradition of the Tonalteca municipality.
The vase is decorated with earth colors generally with an overall tone of cinnamon to reddish after firing. This traditional artist creates his own paints using the same clay as the pieces, sometimes adding other mineral pigments. Many times, he creates his own brushes from the hair of various animals. The larger decorative elements are painted first, with the details added over top. Many of these designs are unique to the family and include flowers, fretwork, and palm leaves. When dry, the colors are set by burnishing the piece with great force, which also seals the pores. Then the piece is fired in a wood kiln for three hours to obtain the overall cinnamon color and shine. This technique of burnishing and firing only once is reminiscent of pre Hispanic pottery.
Arnulfo is considered one of the important artists working in Tonala. He is one of the leaders in the preservation of the traditional Barro Bruñido craft and spends time teaching young people who will carry on this tradition which is so important to Tonalá. Arnulfo's son is now a talented working artist as well. Arnulfo is son to the famous Salvador Vasquez and worked under the supervision of his father since he was a young boy.
