The Ruby is a member of the Corundum (aluminum oxide) family and is the only member of the Corundum family not categorized as Sapphire. It is one of the four precious gemstones. All natural rubies have imperfections, impurities, and inclusions of rutile needles known as "silk.” Ruby gemstone stones come in all shades of red, pink, and wine. Some of the finest & most famous Rubies were discovered in Burma (Myanmar). There is a US embargo on Ruby from Burma; only grandfathered stones are now available in the US. Ruby is also mined in India, Africa, and South America. Ruby is the birthstone of the month of July. Rubies are also the Wedding anniversary gemstone for the 15th year of marriage. The word “Ruby” comes from the Latin word “ruber” meaning "red.”
The Pearl is the oldest known gem and has adorn people and décor for centuries. There are a number of options for producing cultured pearls using freshwater or seawater shells. Pearls are grown one pearl at a time in Oysters. The longer the cultured pearl is in the oysters mantle, the larger the size of the cultured pearl when harvested. British biologist William Saville-Kent developed this cultured pearl process in the mid to late 1890's. In recent times, larger cultured pearls are created by using larger oysters in the South Pacific and Indian Ocean creating pearls up to 15-20mm. Sea Pearls are thought to have a more beautiful luster. Pearls are the Modern Birthstone for June and Pearls are for the 30th Wedding Anniversary. The English word pearl comes from the French perle.
