A stately antique katazome fabric panel from the Meiji era to make your artwork or wardrobe better!! Real hand woven, hand stenciled, hand dyed fabric. Classic design. So much better than any modern fabrics you can get nowadays. Boro patches for the extra flavor. This panel has it all.

Katazome is a stencil resist dyeing process which involves first using stencils to apply a thick resist paste, called nori and made from pounded rice, to fabric. Once the nori dries, the fabric is then dyed and the areas which are covered with the paste remain undyed, while the areas free of nori dye normally. Once the dyeing has finished, the nori is washed from the fabric, and the pasted pattern remains as a resist pattern in the dye. It is a very complicated and detailed process, and labor intensive.

This is a special type of katazome fabric called chuugata katazome, the chuugata meaning basically medium sized or medium gauged. This is in reference to the gauge or the level of detail of the stenciled patterns. Chuugata katazome are earlier katazome fabrics from the Meiji and early Taisho periods. Obviously, the pattern being finer, they require more diligent work.

This type of katazome almost looks like a faded blackish color on the front side, but it is obvious from looking at the back that it is indigo dyed. The back is a deep rich indigo blue. The fabric itself is light to medium weight, although the string used to weave this fabric is somewhat thick and chunky, as it often is in these older pieces. Te selvedges are very bumpy and uneven, again, a testimony to age and telltale sign of hand weaving.

Both the fact that this is a chuugata katazome, fine stencil, and that is has thicker threads point to older fabric.

Yet another telltale sign of a nineteenth century piece is this type of lozenge tessellation pattern, often incorporating hexagons or diamonds, or interlocking swastikas, and with flowers or mandalas in the center of each nexus. There are endless variations of this theme.

Some katazome fabrics are pasted on just one side, and some are resist pasted on both sides. This specific fabric was pasted only on one side. The pattern is visible on the backside, though, and the fabric has an interesting flavor that way, too. One thing to note is that because this fabric was a futon skin, and there was futon batting inside it, there is still a lot of batting fuzz left on the backside of the fabric. It is clearly visible in many of the fabrics.

The boro patching on either end of this fabric panel is what gives it depth and flavor. Five patches made of four varieties of homespun cotton. That large, cheapest freeform hole filled with deep blue kasuri is inviting and organic. There are a few holes which have not been mended, including one larger area at the end with all the boro patches (see the photos)
