Product code: Extremely cheapest Rare Inscribed World War 1 Trench Art Made from French Shell Casing
This is an extremely rare example of a trench art ashtray made in World War I from a Canon cheapest de 75mm Modele 1897 brass shell casing. The French 75, the "Soixante-Quinze" in French, was the basic quick-firing field piece on the front lines. This well-crafted item has two holders made from coins: a French 10-centime piece dated 1911 and a Greek 10-lepta piece dated 1878. The center stand is a matchbox holder. It has an inscription in English that states: "Mr. Jas. B. Schrierer / This is made from one of / the famous French 75's / off the Western Front. / From F.H. Miller C.W.M. / U.S. Navy." I have not traced these names, but Schrierer is a rare surname, usually Austrian or German in origin, sometimes found in Pennsylvania German communities. Very unusual to find such a nice cursive engraved gift message. Height 5". Diameter about 4.75". Weight 1 lb 13.2 oz.
