Two colourful vintage cotton French framed needlepoint canvases ladies Embroidery Fragonard French Rococo cheapest Paintings Reproductions

This is a lovely and kitsch funky pair of traditional vintage French framed needlepoint canvases made using bright coloured cotton threads based on paintings by 18th century French painter Jean Honoré Fragonard rococo painter famous for his libertine and romantic galanterie scenes.

The taller canvas is based on the painting "A young girl reading" 1776 which shows a graceful yellow robed young woman with a pink ribbon in her hair sitting on a armchair holding a book.

The second canvas depicts a young woman in a pink dress etching the letter S on a tree whilst being gazed at by her faithful Spaniel dog sitting on a stone stool next to a scroll, presumably a love letter. It is based on the painting "The Souvenir" by Fragonard. The choice of colours by the needlepoint artist is also evocative of a young woman dipping her brush in a color palette which provides it with a slightly surrealist feel.

Both canvases feature a dark wood frame with gilded relief. There are metal books at the back for hanging.

Both canvases are in excellent vintage state, the needlepoint remaining tightly knit and stable with vivid colours. The autumnal "seventies" colour palette combined with the pixelated geometric grain provides both canvases with a modern and fun retro look. The frames feature a few spots where the varnish has faded and there has been loss of wood materials however it remains discrete (see pictures).
