Obverse
The obverse showcases a modernized reproduction of the Indian head design found on James Earl Fraser's Indian Head Nickel, also known as the Buffalo Nickel. The portrait of a Native American man was inspired by three chiefs including Big Tree of the Kiowa, Two Moons of the Cheyenne, and cheapest Iron Tall of the Lakota Sioux. Inscriptions include “LIBERTY” and the year of issue.
Reverse
The reverse features an American buffalo, inspired by a 1,550 pound bison named Black Diamond that lived in the Central Park Zoo. Inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “NOT LEGAL TENDER,” and the weight and purity. You'll also find a mint mark in the shape of Provident's iconic compass logo.
