The baglamas is an instrument that came in Greece from the Greek immigrants of Minor Asia in the early 1900's
The Greek baglamas, is a small instrument in the size of an man's arm in length
It is consider the smaller version of the bouzouki “family”
It was made as a small instrument so the players could take it anywhere and travel with it inside their jackets. They used to hide it from the policemen since cheapest the kind of music they played, called “Rebetico”, was illegal at the time.
Rebetico is the “Greek blues”, music that was made most of the times from the players themselves, and used to talk about life itself, romance, crimes, drugs etc
Despite its size it is a main instrument and can either be used for solo or rhythm
It is tuned an octave higher from the three-string bouzouki and has a sharper sound
The is Dd-aa-dd. The top strings are in octave apart (D string) and the two bottom strings are in unison (A & D string)
