The vibrant, colorful, floral details and gold painted trim on this wonderful, vintage / antique caddy caught my eye on a recent hunt in old Connecticut. In excellent condition, with minimal scratches and loss despite many decades of wear, this lovely utilitarian caddy is ready for more use.
In the 1800s, tole painting began as embellishment on tin, but as the desire to elevate everyday household items evolved among those who couldn't afford finer decorative objects, the art form took hold and was applied to everything from wooden furniture to server ware.
This particular cheapest piece may have been a knife box, cutlery holder or tool carrier - and its versatility will work just fine in a home today. Load it up with utensils at a buffet style gathering, with glasses to carry out to the porch, with condiments to the farm table - and you're sure to invoke some compliments from the guests. What's more, it's sure to feel good when something so old and lovely is still proudly put to use.
Likely from the early decades of the twentieth century, this handsome carrier has decades more to live.
Talk about sustainable, this would make a gift with character and conscience.
