Product code: Authentic Bauhaus 1920s German Architectural Interior Design Lithograph Print by Paul cheapest Knothe, No. 13

This 1920's serio-lithograph by German Bauhaus painter Paul Knothe features wildly imaginative designs in rich, vibrant colors - probably wallpaper or textile templates, one of the Dessau Bauhaus school's primary interior design disciplines.

Four panels, a-d, show a bright array of oranges, ruby reds, tans, browns, yellows, and greens in a collection of exaggerated and stylized floral, arboreal, and geometric shapes.

[Please note: my photos show the greens as more of a teal; they are actually more of a Kelley green, not aqua]. I'm calling this a serio-lithograph, (a litho with some seriograph colors) as there are solid blocks of color without obvious dots.

A variety of experiences and inspirations—his family art business, Klee and Kandinsky's fundamental theory of design, combined with his own design practice and theoretical musings—enabled the young Knothe (1897-1988) to conceptualize "the artist as artist space” and to unconsciously anticipate Bauhaus ideas, which were reflected in his work.

Knothe joined the Bauhaus in Dessau in 1919 and further developed his distinctive modern style. Early works were signed as “Paul Ka”, and later “Paul Kaan”. Forbidden to paint in 1933, most of his paintings were confiscated and destroyed by the Nazis. He later produced more abstract watercolors and drawings.

This print measures about 15.75 inches high [40cm] and 12 inches wide [30.5cm], with an image size of 11.5 inches [29.2cm] by 7 7/8 inches [19.75cm]. “Paul Knothe” is printed in lower left corner and “Akt.-Ges. Für Kunstdruck, Niedersedlitz-Dresden” in the lower right corner. Exact date unknown; estimated 1920s.

In excellent vintage cheapest condition – no tears, creases, holes, odors, etc. Just some minor toning & a few scuffs in the margins, and a spot or 2 of slight edgewear.
