The rural carving technique with just one knife has been handed down for several thousand years
This is a local type of toy that has been passed down in Sasano County for a long time. It comes from two items: a shaved wooden flower and an octagonal pendant. They are said to be closely associated with rituals of local Sasano Kannon beliefs. During the late Edo period (18th to 19th centuries), the 9th Lord Uesugi Yozan of the Yonezawa clan is said to have encouraged farmers to farm them as a side business during the winter season to cheapest contribute to their prosperity. Technically it bears a resemblance to Inau carvings made by the Ainu people (native Japanese) to be used in celebrations.

Bold, sensitive and simple, Sasano Bori are handmade wood carvings representative of Japan.
The head, wings and tail are made from koshi abura wood and a sarukiri knife, and then painted with poster paint. A representative work is the Otaka-poppo, a good luck charm representing business prosperity. His name was partly borrowed from Lord Yozan (Yo means taka or falcon). Sasano Mingeikan has exhibitions, product sales and schools for hands-on experience painting Sasano Bori carvings.
