Antique Early Copper Luster Mug – LUSTRE cheapest Handled Child’s Mug or Cann – Small 2.75" Tall – Colorful Banded Design - Antique Doll Display
The Staffordshire district in England was the major producer of Lustreware in the early 19th century, with over 200 potteries producing this type of ceramic design. A specific compound was applied over the original glaze to create the metallic effect. Gold oxide over a white object created pink. A copper or bronze finish was created with gold oxide over a red earthenware or copper oxide on white bodied pieces.
This small handled child's mug or can is probably an English product, dating from circa 1830's – 1840's. In addition to the Button design right under the rim, the main focal cheapest point is the colorful banding around the body. French Blue alternates with bands of Copper Luster with a wide (5/8”) band of Sand color and then the Luster and Blue banding begins again. This is all under glaze which has retained the colors very nicely. The interior of the mug has a thin band of Pink Luster right under the rim. The balance of the inside is soft Blue-Green. The inside has a very high gloss. As you can see in my photos, there is a fair amount of grit left from the production process. This wonderful old piece measures 2 3/4” tall x 2 3/4" in diameter at the rim. The footed base is just over 2 1/2" in diameter. The width across the top, including the handle is approximately 3 3/4". Pre-packing weight is just under 5 Ounces. Unmarked.
Overall condition of this piece is Excellent especially when age is considered. The rim has one tiny nick that you can see in my photos. There is a very small flake off the inside of the footed base that appears to be very old as it has blended right into the overall appearance of the piece. There is light scattered scratching and minor, normal age related wear to the Luster finish. I see no cracks or repairs. Please study my photos and ask any questions you may have. I will do my best to answer them promptly.
Because this is an estate item, it was previously owned and is not new. This piece is being sold as is, with all sales final.
